The Medicine Cards set is a classic loved by many. Those of you with Native American leanings will especially love them. There are fifty-four cards illustrated with various animals. The Native Americans have always understood that there was a way to open to the energy of a particular type of animal and be imbued or take on some positive qualities embodied by the creature. They also believed that certain animals acted as guides for humans. This seems to be through resonance, or an energetic similarity.
The card I most often draw is the wolf. The wolf has a dual nature; on the one hand the wolf is a pack animal and as such is highly social. Yet on the other hand the wolf is seen as a solitary figure. The wolf has places he/she goes where no one else goes. I started drawing this card at a point in my life when I was drawn to study intensely all kinds of little known alternatives to mainstream psychology. Like the wolf that ranges for miles alone, I traveled all over the United States for several years.
So I cut myself out from the pack and went alone into all these places. But, the paradox is that it was only my love for humanity [my pack] that could motivate me to do all that. Like the wolf I returned to my pack to teach new things. That is the nature of someone with wolf energy and that was my pattern. It helped me to see and understand myself better, because during those years I felt emotionally torn every time I had to leave my kids for more training. Like the wolf I had a dual nature I deeply wanted both experiences. I wanted to be with my kids, but I also needed to honor the part of me that is a solitary pioneer.
The cards provided context and validation for who I was and who I was becoming. I saw myself more clearly for having used the Medicine Cards. Now years later I see the wisdom in what I did and I feel satisfied that I honored my nature, because as we face the new millennium I am fully trained and can help my immediate pack [family] and my greater pack which is humanity at large. I get to work out of my home and be with my pack far more than many mothers. The Medicine Cards helped me to know myself and accept myself.
Another way to use the Medicine Cards is to notice any unusual or notable encounters with the animal kingdom and look up the animal. This seems especially common among those just getting started on the spiritual path. It is both exciting and beneficial when this happens, people glow as they read about their newfound totem animal. Your totem animal appears to tell you something important about the circumstances currently unfolding in your life. Explore the energies of the animal kingdom with the Medicine Cards, they can be very self-empowering.
